Physics 11: Simple Machine and Mechanical Advantage

Hi Everyone,

We saw two example of lever today (pop can tab, meter stick lever) in class and learned about how they can help us "magnify" forces with mechanical advantage. Hopefully you'll notice the tools around us that use simple machines as well!

Here are the slides today:

Science 10H: Blackbody Radiation (Mar 12)

Hi Everyone,

We investigated blackbody radiation from us and the stars in two aspects today: color and power. With higher temperature, blackbody radiation moves from infrared to visible light, so hotter stars are actually bluer, while colder stars are redder. We also found out about blackbody radiation from us. We emit in infrared and makes a few hundred watts of blackbody radiation.

Science 9H: Meiosis and Sexual Reproduction (Mar 9)

Hi Everyone,

It's crazy how there could be 2^46 combinations for human offsprings! It is almost impossible for parents to give birth to two offsprings of the same genes, unless they are identical twins.

Here are the slides today:

Physics 11: Mechanical Advantage and Simple Machine (Mar 9)

Hi Everyone,

We've learned about how a lever work today. Measuring these quantities tell us how simple machines help us, just like the pop can tab!

Science 10H: Blackbody Radiation (March 9)

Hi Everyone,

Did you find out how much blackbody power is in you? It's a lot of energy we're spending by maintaining this temperature! Radiation is actually the third type of heat transfer in addition to conduction and convection.

Here are the slides of the day:

Physics 11: Conversion of Energy (March 8)

Hi Everyone,

We had a look at conversion of energy between several forms today. We are considering potential, kinetic, and thermal energy in this unit. Keep track of the three types of energy as the trip of the object goes on.

Here are the slides for today:

https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/12mJ0UDkyI1TQKt8NPsDa4wojAfyzwqCmeilVIZb4Gdo/edit?usp=sharing

Answers to the worksheet can be found either here, or at the back of the classroom.

Have a good weekend,

Science 10H: Electromagnetic Spectrum (Mar 8)

Hi Everyone,

Thank you for participating in our station learning today. We learned about different forms of electromagnetic radiation. They are all electromagnetic radiation, but they have different energies. Together, we place them on a spectrum, which has radiation in different forms, thus different energies.

Here are the station notes. Have a look.

Physics 11: Conversion of Energy (Mar 7)

Hi Everyone,

We may have worked too much on the symbolic conversion of energy, while missing out the point here. Think about how much potential energy and kinetic energy an object has at different parts of its trip. With gravity, the two kinds of energy converts from one form to another. Here are the slides of the day:

Physics 11: Kinetic and Potential Energy

Hi Everyone,

Hope you enjoyed our little trip up and down the stairwell. Summary of the day:
1. Kinetic energy of an object depends on its mass and velocity/speed.
2. Potential energy of an object depends on its mass, position, and gravity.

For today's slides, go to
https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1AaaWdeMuXiGjNCnqaiCzkAR3brmiHBrZzDwjZ6OgnXg/edit?usp=sharing

You should be able to find all of the materials needed to finish the worksheet.
For Wednesday's quiz, expect similar questions as we did today, but with kinetic and potential energy as well.

See you on Wednesday.

Science 10H: The Sun

Hi Everyone,

We made some pinhole cameras today, but unfortunately the Sun did not cooperate. We will try to use the pinhole camera some other day when it's sunny.

The Sun has many elements on its surface, and hydrogen is the most dominant one. That's why we see so many different features when we look at the hydrogen by itself. I've revised today's slides so they make a little bit more sense. Here's the link to it:

https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1vUQH0NjcLlrNDtxghy6qbp26NBJTV5ZGmtSXTbEyxws/edit?usp=sharing

Our quiz on Wednesday will have the materials learned up to today (Monday Mar 5). It will contain:
1. Planets of the Solar System
2. Moon phases
3. Comets
4. Meteoroid/ meteor/ meteorite
5. Dwarf planets
6. The Sun's surface features.

See you on Wednesday.

Physics 11: Work (Mar 2)

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for coming today. I hope the basketball helps you visualize the positive and negative work your hands and Earth's gravity is doing to you. Beyond calculations, think about whether you do work or not. We do not work by walking down the hall, but our muscles are constantly moving up and down against gravity. This is why we feel tired.

Until Monday, enjoy your weekend!

Physics 11: Work (Mar 1)

Hi Everyone,

Today we visualized work. By moving a basketball up and down, we do work to it. Just remember, work can be negative, when the displacement is in the opposite direction of the force.

For reinforcement, see textbook sections 10.1, questions 1, 3, 5, 6, 7. They will help you strengthen your understanding about work.

Have a good weekend,

Mr. T
